Founded in 1980, Schug Carneros Estate Winery is the showcase and lifelong dream of one of California’s most celebrated winemakers, Walter Schug. Drawing on his extensive experience in the production of fine wines in both Europe and California, Walter set up his own winery with his wife Gertrud in the cool, marine climate of the Carneros Appellation. Here he could focus on the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals that had always been close to his heart.

In 1995, Sonoma-born winemaker Michael Cox came on board at Schug as assistant winemaker. Trained in Enology at UC Davis, Mike was promoted to winemaker in 1996 and placed in charge of day-to-day winemaking activities, a position he continues to hold. Today, Walter holds the title of winemaster emeritus and uses his experience of more than half a century of harvests to provide guidance to the team. Surrounded by estate vineyards, Schug Carneros Estate Winery lies sheltered in a hillside five miles south of the historic town of Sonoma.
